Revelation

One of the delightful aspects of membership in the LDS Church is the concept of revelation - both personal and institutional.  I never tire of reading the viewpoints of others on this remarkable subject, even if they contain frustration or doubt.

Personal revelation is the heart of the matter when it comes to religious experience, at least for me.  I feel strongly that we live far below our privileges when it comes to personal revelation.  I have written more frequently about this subject than any other.

"Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord.  How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways.  And no man knoweth of his ways save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God." (Jacob 4:8)

Links to a few select essays on the subject of revelation I have shared on my blog:

Revelation and Emotional Response - An account of personal revelation received in answer to prayer about who I should marry.  From a talk given in the Young Adult ward.

Letter to a Reader - A detailed description of an early revelatory experience received while at Ricks College in the early 70's.  Written in response to a reader request.

A Call for More Personal Revelation - I relate another foundational revelatory event in my early life as I prepared for my mission.  It has a profound effect on my testimony.

A Different Kind of Religious Education - An early version of my experience at Ricks College that changed my life.  I knew for myself that personal revelation was real.

Divine Manifestations Must Have a Purpose - Some thoughts about sacred spirtual experiences and divine manifestations.  I believe the Lord wants to reveal more to us.

Spiritual Experiences as a Foundation for Faith - In which I ponder the realities that not all members of the church receive revelation or remain true to what they receive.

Elder Packer was Right About Bearing Testimony - A testimony is to be found in the bearing of it.  Revelation is often received while on our feet teaching the gospel.

A Different Kind of Knowledge - I develop the idea that a testimony must be based on personal revelation to be the kind that will support us through troubles and trials.

Critical Thinking Among Faithful Mormons - I respond to a reader who visited my blog to debate his understanding of a Mormon Testimony.  I don't think he ever got it.
